Is acupuncture covered by insurance?
Yes. More and more insurance companies offer policies covering acupuncture and related services such as cupping, heat treatment, etc. Please refer to the following list of “Insurance Companies that Cover Acupuncture” to find out if your insurance company is included.
How to find if my insurance covers acupuncture?
Just give a call to your insurance company’s consumer or benefits line. This number will be found on your membership card. When you are inquiring about your acupuncture benefits, the following questions can help you to determine your eligibility and coverage:
- Does my plan have an acupuncture benefit?
- How many acupuncture treatments am I allowed each year?
- Is there a deductible? How much deductible I have to pay?
- What is the co-pay for a preferred provider?
- What percentage will I pay for a out-of-network provider?
- Do I need a referral from my Primary Care Physician to see the acupuncturist?
Auto Insurance
Most auto insurance policies cover medical expenses for acupuncture treatments incurred as a result automobile related injuries. This is like a health insurance policy specifically related to auto injury regardless of whether the injured is at fault or not. There are a few simple steps that could help you protect your legal rights.
- First, obtain the name, address, and telephone number of the other driver and verify the information by that driver's license.
- Obtain the name of his or her insurance company.
- Obtain the name, address, and telephone number of any witnesses to the accident.
- If there has been any possible damage as a result of the accident, a police officer should be called to the scene to prepare an accident report.
- Report the accident to your insurance company and the other driver’s insurance company immediately in order to qualify for payment of property damage and medical benefits under your or his/her automobile policy.
When you come to our clinic, you need to provide us the following information:

- Adjuster’s name and phone number
- Police report (if available)
- Car damage evaluation
Even if you are the one to be responsible for the car accident, you may still covered by the policy if you have paid the medical premium.

- Your case adjuster’s name and phone number
- Your work’s compensation insurance company’s address and phone number
- Your primary work’s compensation doctor’s prescription for acupuncture treatment
- Authorization for acupuncture treatment from your work’s compensation insurance company
